SLoth Endangerment
Introduction:
Many sloths die each year because of manmade objects like cars and power lines. The three toed and two toed sloths are becoming endangered in Costa Rica. Sloths aren’t are as tall as average mans knees. they usually grow to be 23 inches, and they sleep 15-20 hours a day. Even when they are awake they hang on branches motionless for hours. When they finally get up and moving they eat leaves and go roaming around. thats when they go roaming, they roam on to newly built roads and often get hit. Sloths are endangered for what humans do and make. Every day in Costa Rica, sloths are getting hit by cars, or knocked down from what they think are trees but really powerlines.
What?
Humans are a big part of sloths dying. They build multiple power lines and roads in areas animals used to call their home. Now they are getting killed in their own territory. Sloths can’t find new homes as fast as humans can. Humans are building their houses in the forest to be away from everyone. They think that they’re helping out by going green and only using sources that they have around them, but in this day and age, no one can go without a cell phone and wifi, which require power lines to power them.
Where?
You can find most three and two toed sloths in Costa Rica, either in captivate or roaming free in the forest. When people tear down trees, the home sloths habitats are destroyed. It takes them awhile to get used to their homes being gone. In some cases people see sloths come back to where they used to live and sit and mourn. Humans find the sloths and they are in critical condition, they are taken to a “ Sloth Habitat” where people take good care of them by giving them baths, food, surgery until they are able to go back into the wild.
Why?
People often think the amount of space, money and supplies they have aren’t enough. They want more so they move their families to places where they can have all the space they want. Decisions like this have a big impact on the wildlife in Costa Rica. People are invading forests to get rubber trees so people all around the world kids can erase their mistakes at school. Just because sloths don’t impact the world like other animals and objects near them, doesn’t mean that they don’t have a place here. People think of themselves as on top, nothing can harm them. Sloths don’t deserve to get killed or put in zoos just for the benefit. Sloths have feelings just like any other object.
How?
Even though humans are not at fault for hitting animals, unless they run into animals to see the result, or to see if they could last the impact of a car hitting them. We have warning signs every where, for example, construction up ahead, merging roads, and ducks crossing, kids crossing, and in Costa Rica there are even sloth crossing sign. Sloths are nocturnal and are often killed at night. Most people don’t know that sloths are awake at night, sloths usually sleep 15-20 hours a day, and wake up when it’s dinner time or already dark. sloths roam when they eat. they move around at night and cross new roads that hadn’t been there the day before. Costa Rica put signs up to protect sloths.
When?
When sloths are killed or injured it is usually at night, people are going out not expecting to hit something this late, then next thing they know they have a animal on the roof or their car. Another problem Costa Rican people have is their power going out. Sloths mistake power lines for trees, when this happen sloths get electrocuted, And are in and out of the they go into a pet hospital and are set out again. one way Costa Rica cable workers are stepping up to help out sloths are by putting large round balls to cover part of the line, stopping them in their paths.
Who?
People of all ages in Costa Rica need to know what they are doing to sloths. While humans have bigger problems, Sloths go through the similar problems Humans go through depression, when someone dies, when they’re battling a deadly disease and even when they are stopping a addiction. Sloths go through many of the same feelings humans do. When they are lost for a long time in a area they aren’t used to they can get depressed and not go out until they have the same animals, trees, and even a mild case, the same smell. The biggest thing that gets sloths depressed about is when a sloth “family member” dies. They then sleep more and won’t eat until they get used to the fact that they won’t come back. They go through a mourning process just like humans do.
Why is it a problem?
Sloths are dying for no reason. Humans are being greedy and taking all. People want to find all the new species of birds or trees, plants and sloths. They want to rush the production so they can claim the money and tear down more or the rainforest. In the article "Bradypus pygmaeus" IUCN Red list they state that "The whole rainforest is decreasing because of what humans do. Since the end of WWII about 80% of the rainforest had been destroyed". People are so eager to see what they can find next.
Solutions
To help from sloths going extinct we need to make more sanctuaries need to be created in Costa Rica, with adding Sanctuaries, People can get both their land and supplies. Also sloths are safe from any danger that they might encounter. While protecting sloths new sanctuaries would be a win-win. Humans would have opportunities by clearing the land and sloths would be protected in the sanctuaries.
Conclusion
Sloths are getting killed for what humans are creating. They don’t deserve to have their homes taken away. Humans don’t need to destroy sloths habitats to get what they want. Sloths have feelings, and they are affected everyday by the actions of humans. We don’t want sloths to end up extent. Kids today should be able to take their kids to Costa Rica to see sloths, not just pictures in a book.
